He was predeceased in 2009 by his wife and best friend Cherrie and is survived by son Grant (Sandy), daughter Carol, son Scott (Grace), daughter Cathy, and five grandchildren - Christopher, Steven, Catherine, Cassandra, and Oliver. Dennis was born in Winnipeg and lived most of his life there with the exception of two years on loan to Bell Canada in their Ottawa (NORAD) operation and a short stay in San Diego. He attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute and the University of Manitoba. He joined Manitoba Telephone System in 1949 and worked there for 39 years in various positions retiring as Manager, Marketing Training. In June of 2009 he and his wife, Cherrie, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. In the community he sat as a member of the Tuxis and Older Boys Parliament representing St. Paul's United young peoples, served as an elder and member of the official board of Harstone Memorial United Church and was a baseball coach and umpire at the Kirkfield-Westwood Community Club. He was an enthusiastic Freemason belonging to Ft. During his life he was also a member of the A.R.R.L., the Sales and Ad Club of Winnipeg, St. Boniface Golf Club, Telephone Pioneers of America and the Canadian Institute of Management. Taking early retirement in 1988, he spent many happy years at the family cottage on Channel Island, Lake of the Woods with family, friends and his dogs Murphy and Olivia. Dennis enjoyed fishing, boating, photography and observing wild life. He was also able to enjoy several winter vacations in warmer climates and particularly enjoyed Hawaii, Barbados and the Bahamas. Many summer camping trips to the Canadian Rockies were special treats for the family. He had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Many thanks to the amazing staff at Victoria Hospital for their compassion and care of him during his final weeks. Special mention should also be made of his dedicated caregiver Ruth. At his request cremation and a family memorial service have taken place. Donations to your favourite charity are suggested in place of floral tributes. "Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again."

I am the daughter of a childhood friend of Cherrie's - Helen Hammond (Binkley). After Cherrie's death my mother asked me to send some photographs of Cherrie to Dennis. He was delighted to receive them and wrote to thank me. Since then we have sent each other a Christmas card each year. It was obvious to me that he had dearly loved his wife and treasured the photos of her as a young girl. I am sorry to hear of his death. He follows my mother, who passed away two weeks ago. I hope the three of them have been reunited. - Posted by: Alana Stephens (Daughter of Helen Hammond (Binkley) who was a good friend of Cherrie's. I sent childhood photos of H) on: Apr 04, 2015
